Learning Expanded Through Active play
Our RootS
L.E.A.P. was developed in April 2022. The program aims to meet the needs of the whole-child by providing robust access to child-directed outdoor free play. L.E.A.P. was developed in direct response to the growing needs of children, particularly in the area of mental health. The program is rooted in the robust research base related to play with influences from the Finnish education system. Beyond review of the research, program developer Annie Brandt utilized her 17 years of professional experience in public education, Fulbright research in Finland, and personal experiences as a parent to develop the program.
Goals
By providing dedicated time for child-directed outdoor play, L.E.A.P. aims to foster mental/physical well-being, creativity, and social skills. These foundational elements are essential for equipping children with the skills they need in the classroom and beyond. In addition to benefiting the above-mentioned skills, child-directed free play benefits children's academic achievement, executive function skills, behavior, and school attendance. We are committed to enhancing the overall development of students through the transformative power of play.
IMplementation
L.E.A.P. is designed to provide two daily outdoor play breaks including one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Breaks are at least 15 minutes in length and occur in addition to a regularly scheduled recess period.
The focus is on CHILD-DIRECTED outdoor play.
